Under the Louisville Police Department's field training officer (FTO) program, recruits will be assigned to FTO's in each of four districts for 3-month periods over the 1-year probation.
Abstract
Recruits will be deployed with the FTO's as a team and will be evaluated by all four FTO's. Since the success of the program lies with the FTO's, they must not have any pending disciplinary action against them; must have completed 3 years of active duty; and will received 16 hours of training in police policy and procedures, standards, counseling, and evaluation and reporting. FTO's will supply weekly, standardized evaluations of recruits' attitudes, appearance, knowledge, job performance, and interpersonal relations. In addition, the FTO and the sergeant are responsible for compiling monthly evaluation reports, and the sergeant and lieutenant will conduct two civil service performance appraisals. Unscheduled monitoring will be undertaken by the General Review Committee throughout the year of training. Evaluation forms and schedules and policy procedures are provided.
