THIS FILM SHOWS BUSINESSES HOW TO BECOME MORE AWARE OF CRIME FROM INTERNAL SOURCES AND HOW TO PREVENT IT, WITH ASSISTANCE FROM LOCAL POLICE CRIME PREVENTION UNITS.
Abstract
THE BENEFITS THAT COULD RESULT FROM INVOLVING CRIME PREVENTION OFFICERS AND LOSS CONTROL ENGINEERS IN BUSINESS INTERNAL SECURITY PLANNING ARE DEMONSTRATED, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTIVE EMPLOYEE AND MANAGEMENT ATTITUDES IS ALSO EMPHASIZED. METHODS FOR PREVENTING EMPLOYEE PILFERAGE AND THEFT ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING MARKING THE COMPANY'S NAME ON TOOLS AND ALLOWING THE EMPLOYEES TO BORROW THEM FOR PRIVATE USE, UNANNOUNCED SPOT CHECKS ON EMPLOYEES, AND CAREFUL CONTROLS OF PACKAGES COMING INTO AND LEAVING THE FACILITY. THE EMPLOYER MUST, HOWEVER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO INFRINGE UPON THE PERSONAL RIGHTS OF THOSE WORKING FOR HIM. ANOTHER EFFECTIVE METHOD OF REDUCING EMPLOYEE THEFT IS TO POST A NOTICE OF THE COMPANY'S POLICY REGARDING THE THEFT OF ASSETS. THE USE OF SUCH NOTICES HAS BEEN SHOWN TO HAVE GOOD DETERRENT EFFECTS. ALL EXPENSE ACCOUNTS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE NOT BEING PADDED. OTHER WAYS OF REDUCING CRIME ARE LIMITING COMPUTER ACCESS AND PROSECUTING EMBEZZLERS TO DISCOURAGE OTHERS. THIS FILM COVERS THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF WHITE COLLAR CRIME, INCLUDING FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, EXPENSE ACCOUNT CHEATING, AND COMPUTER DATA BANK SECURITY BREACHES. IT IS DESIGNED TO SHOW WHAT BUSINESS PEOPLE CAN DO TO PROTECT THEMSELVES, AND ALSO WHAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS DOING TO HELP. A HANDBOOK IS INCLUDED. SEE ALSO NCJ-50130.
