The articles in this issue of Social Justice counter the myths of youth violence and probe the realities in school, the community and the juvenile justice system.
Abstract
Most articles highlight the situation of urban youth of color, who have been identified as the “Other” and further marginalized. Some articles propose solutions that address youth violence and include the perspectives of youth themselves in shaping those solutions. The volume includes articles that specifically focus on the lives of girls, who have been consistently neglected in the criminology literature. The 14 articles discuss a variety of other topics relating to youth violence, including: (1) how the school experience itself can demean youth and push them into a marginalized lifestyle; (2) victimization and fear of crime among Latina girls and young women; (3) substance abuse; (4) a model community-based juvenile system; (5) girls in gangs; and (6) mentoring programs as a solution for youth violence.
