THE JUSTICE DATA INTERFACE CONTROLLER (JDIC) EXPANSION PROJECT USES TWO COMPUTERS PLUS EXTENSIVE LINE SWITCHING AND PATCHING FACILITIES AT THE CENTRAL SITE TO LINK 87 LOS ANGELES, CALIF., CRIMINAL JUSTICE FACILITIES.
Abstract
THE COMPLEX SYSTEM CONSISTS OF 56 REMOTE VIDEO TERMINALS WITH 55 ASSOCIATED PRINTERS, PLUS 18 LOCAL VIDEO TERMINALS IN THE SHERIFF'S RADIO CENTER. TWO PDP-11/70 COMPUTER SYSTEMS FROM DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION PROVIDE 192K BYTES OF PARITY CORE MEMORY, WHICH CAN BE EXPANDED UP TO 2 MILLION BYTES. THE SYSTEM ALSO HAS 2K BYTES OF HIGH-SPEED BIPOLAR CACHE MEMORY TO GIVE FAST ACCESS TO REPEATEDLY USED MEMORY LOCATIONS. EXTENSIVE LINE DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES ARE DESIGNED INTO THE SYSTEM TO MINIMIZE LINE OPERATION PROBLEMS. THE SOFTWARE WAS DEVELOPED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FEATURES OF A PARTICULAR TERMINAL AND TO REDUCE OPERATOR ERROR. JDIC REPLACES THE SHERIFF'S FAST TELETYPE NETWORK, WHICH HANDLED AN AVERAGE OF 20,893 MESSAGES PER DAY IN 1976. DURING ITS FIRST 3 MONTHS OF OPERATION (JANUARY THROUGH MARCH, 1977), JDIC PROCESSED ABOUT 27,000 MESSAGES A DAY WITH NO INCREASE IN PERSONNEL OR LABOR HOURS. JDIC LINKS 39 FACILITIES BELONGING TO THE LOS ANGELES SHERIFF'S OFFICE (INCLUDING JAILS), THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY, THE MARSHAL'S OFFICE, AND 46 MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS WITH STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES. THIS IS 44 PERCENT OF ITS PLANNED CAPACITY. INCLUDED IN THIS NONTECHNICAL OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEM ARE CHARTS SHOWING VIDEO TERMINAL LINKAGES, PERFORMANCE CHARTS DEMONSTRATING SYSTEM RELIABILITY, AND BASIC OPERATIONS INFORMATION. APPENDIXES CONTAIN THE PROJECT TIMETABLES, A LIST OF AGENCIES SERVED, AND REFERENCES. (GLR)
