OPERATION AND EVALUATION OF A WASHINGTON D.C. PROGRAM OFFERING COLLEGE CREDITS TO INMATES ON AND OFF CAMPUS.
Abstract
THE FOCUS OF THIS PAPER IS ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, POST-RELEASE COLLEGE INVOLVEMENT, AND RECIDIVISM. ENROLLEE SELECTION, FACULTY, COURSES AND GRADING, AND PROGRAM PROBLEMS AND PHASES FROM FALL 1970 TO JUNE 1972 ARE EXAMINED. IN ADDITION, SUPPORT SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE COLLEGE, COUNSELING, AND POST-RELEASE ASSISTANCE ARE REVIEWED. LORTON HAS A HIGHER PARTICIPATION RATE THAN OTHER PRISON-COLLEGE PROGRAMS IN THE U.S. AND FOCUSES ON TRAINING BLACK MANPOWER FOR WORK IN THE GHETTO. TWO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS FORMED BY RELEASED INMATESTUDENTS ARE CREATE (COMMITTEE FOR REHABILITATIVE EFFORTS ATTAINED THROUGH EDUCATION) WHICH IS INVOLVED IN EDUCATING DELINQUENTS, AND ING (INTENSIVE NARCOTICS GROUP). A THIRD GROUP DIRECTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH EDUCATION AND WELFARE, HELPS TO ASSURE EMPLOYMENT FOR THE INMATE. APPENDED MATERIAL INDICATES COURSE ADDITIONS PER SEMESTER.
