DESCRIBES PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN HOLLAND, SWEDEN, PORTUGAL, ENGLAND AND NORWAY.
Abstract
GENERALLY THE EUROPEAN PRISON EDUCATOR FACES THE SAME PROBLEMS AS HIS AMERICAN COUNTERPART, SUCH AS LACK OF FUNDING TO EXPAND AND EXPERIMENT, DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE LACK OF PUBLIC INTEREST. OCCASIONAL RESENTMENT BY CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS EXISTS TO SOME DEGREE. HOWEVER, RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INMATES AND CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WERE FOUND TO BE GOOD IN HOLLAND, SWEDEN, AND FINLAND. MOST OF THE PROGRAMS DEAL WITH HELPING ONE COMPLETE HIS BASIC EDUCATION AND SOME TRAINING IN MARKETABLE SKILLS. WHAT IS GOING ON IN INMATE HIGHER EDUCATION IN ENGLAND AND SWEDEN ARE NO MORE THAN SMALL PILOT PROJECTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
