THE GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE FEELS THAT LEAA SHOULD COORDINATE EFFORTS WITH THE STATES TO ASSURE THAT PROJECTS THAT MERIT CONTINUATION RECEIVE FUNDING FROM STATE AND LOCAL SOURCES WHEN LEAA FUNDING ENDS.
Abstract
A SURVEY OF THE STATES INDICATED THAT THERE WERE MANY DIVERGENT POLICIES ON THE CONTINUED FUNDING OF PROJECTS. IN SIX STATES STUDIED, IT WAS LEARNED THAT 95 OF 159 DISCONTINUED PROJECTS SHOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN CONTINUED. THE RESPONSE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO THIS REPORT IS CONTAINED IN AN APPENDIX.
