A COMMUNITY-BASED RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM SERVING PROBATIONERS FROM JAIL AND PERSONS AWAITING TRIAL IN HONOLULU, HAWAII, IS DESCRIBED AND EVALUATED.
Abstract
ORIGINALLY DESIGNED AS A CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTER FOR EX-OFFENDERS AND OTHER ADULT MALES IN NEED OF SHORT-TERM CARE, LILIHA HOUSE CHANGED ITS PROGRAM EMPHASIS AND PRIMARY TARGET POPULATION IN ITS SECOND YEAR OF OPERATION. THE FACILITY EMPLOYS A BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION CONTINGENCY CONTRACTING SYSTEM TO MEET THE NEEDS OF MALES BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 22 WHO ARE EITHER ON PROBATION FROM JAIL, SENTENCED TO LILIHA HOUSE AS A CONDITION OF PROBATION, OR AWAITING TRIAL. THE CONTINGENCY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM CONSISTS OF A CONTRACTING SYSTEM, A TOKEN ECONOMY, AND A GROUP PROCESS. THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK AND RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAM ARE DISCUSSED. CHARACTERISTICS OF RESIDENTS, PROGRAM DESIGN AND OPERATION, AND RESIDENT BEHAVIOR DURING AND AFTER PARTICIPATION IN THE LILIHA HOUSE PROGRAM ARE DESCRIBED. EXPLORATION OF RELATIONSHIPS AMONG 40 VARIABLES IN A POPULATION OF 21 SUBJECTS SUGGESTS IMPORTANT LINKS BETWEEN SUCCESS IN THE PROGRAM AND EMPLOYMENT AND BETWEEN EMPLOYMENT AND SUCCESS ON PROBATION. THE CONTINGENCY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IS CONCLUDED TO BE A USEFUL ONE. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING LILIHA HOUSE ARE PRESENTED. SUPPORTING DATA AND DOCUMENTATION ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
