Standards are provided for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of library services on a continuing basis in State and Federal adult correctional institutions.
Abstract
The standards presented have been approved by the American Correctional Association Committee on Institution Libraries, The American Correctional Association/American Library Association Joint Committee on Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, and the Standards Committe of the American Library Association. Assumptions underlying all the standards are that (1) librarians share responsibility for the habilitation of all adult offenders; (2) library service equivalent to that available to communities should be offered to all adult offenders in residential facilities; and (3) such library service recognizes the specific needs and interests of all adult offenders. The need for this revised set of standards comes from new directions in correctional thinking and recent developments in library service. Areas to which the standards apply are the place of library services and the librarian in the organization of a correctional institution, library philosophy, materials, library services, library facilities, library budget, and staff. A glossary of standards terminology is provided.
