AN INFORMAL, PERSONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE LIBRARY OPERATIONS AND FACILITIES LOCATED IN THE KING COUNTY YOUTH SERVICE CENTER IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
Abstract
WRITTEN BY THE LIBRARIAN OF THE YOUTH SERVICE CENTER, THIS ARTICLE STRESSES THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE LIBRARY FACILITIES AND THE UNUSUAL SITUATIONS ARISING IN THE LIBRARY'S OPERATION. THE LIBRARY IS LOCATED IN THE NEW CHILD CARE WING OF THE YOUTH SERVICE CENTER, WHICH IS A DETENTION FACILITY FOR CHILDREN AWAITING COURT ACTION. THE YOUTHS RANGE IN AGE FROM 8 TO 18, AND ARE CLASSED ROUGHLY INTO 3 GROUPS: DEPENDENT, DELINQUENT, AND INCORRIGIBLE. A WIDE VARIETY OF SUBJECTS AND MATERIAL ARE HOUSED IN THE LIBRARY; THESE WERE CAREFULLY CHOSEN TO APPEAL TO THE YOUTHS IN THE CENTER. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION, YOUTHS IN THE CENTER UTILIZE THE HOLDINGS A GREAT DEAL AND DO NOT DAMAGE THE LIBRARY MATERIALS....DMC
