THIS REPORT PROVIDES A DESCRIPTION OF THE TREATMENT CENTER DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAMS, AND PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION WHICH SHOWED THAT THE CENTER IS MAKING SATISFACTORY PROGRESS TOWARD GOAL ACHIEVEMENT.
Abstract
THE LEXINGTON REGIONAL TREATMENT CENTER WAS INITIATED IN NOVEMBER OF 1971. THE PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A TWO-FOLD BENEFIT TO THE OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS: 1) TO REDUCE THE POPULATION OF THE TWO TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND 2) TO PERMIT SOME OFFENDERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE TREATMENT AND TRAINING WHICH MIGHT ALLOW FOR BETTER POST-RELEASE ADAPTATION. SOME DELAY WAS EXPERIENCED IN IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM; BECAUSE OF THIS, A FULL EVALUATION WAS NOT POSSIBLE. INSTEAD, A PROCEDURE WAS INSTITUTED WHICH INCLUDED SITE VISITS AND RANDOM USE OF QUESTIONNAIRES OF STAFF AND INMATES. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE PROJECT GOALS HAD GENERALLY BEEN ATTAINED. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVED STAFF TRAINING, EXPANSION OF THE COUNSELING STAFF, AND INCREASED STAFF-INMATE COMMUNICATION ARE INCLUDED.
