Abstract
A brief history of sexual assault explains the cultural attitudes toward sexuality and their influence on sexual assault. A quiz presents 12 common beliefs about sexual assault and permits readers to test their knowledge. Charts explain how the Canadian law has been changed to include three levels of sexual assault. Techniques for emotional self-defense through assertiveness, physical defense through reduction of risks, and physical defense if attacked are summarized. Guidelines on actions to take following an assault explain what to expect at the hospital, from the police, in the courts, from family and friends, and in attitudes and feelings as a victim. Lists of warning signs of sexual abuse and definitions are included, as is a 16-item bibliography.
