CONTAINING 16 SPIRIT MASTERS AND AN 11 PAGE TEACHER'S GUIDE, THIS BOOKLET IS DESIGNED TO EQUIP CHILDREN TO AVOID DANGER AND DEAL WITH EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.
Abstract
THE ACTIVITIES ON THE DUPLICATING MASTERS AND THE CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS TOGETHER WILL HELP CHILDREN LEARN TO BEHAVE IN WAYS THAT KEEP THEM SAFE AND ENABLE THEM TO WORK WITH AND FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES. THE PROGRAM CAN BE USED EITHER IN THE CLASSROOM OR IN CONJUNCTION WITH LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY PROGRAMS. THE BOOKLET EMPHASIZES THE FAMILY'S PART IN PROVIDING FOR SAFETY AND PREVENTING CRIME; I.E., DETERMINING WHICH NEIGHBORS CAN MOST OFTEN BE RELIED ON OR ARE MOST OFTEN HOME; INDICATING WHICH AREAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARE DESERTED, DANGEROUS, POTENTIAL TROUBLE SPOTS; INFORMING CHILDREN OF SAFETY RULES SUCH AS ANSWERING THE TELEPHONE OR DOOR IF THEY ARE ALONE; OR LETTING CHILDREN KNOW HOW AND WHEN TO ASK FOR HELP. THE ATTITUDE TO BE ENCOURAGED IN USING THE BOOKLET IS NOT THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS, BUT THAT CHILDREN CAN FIND HELP AND BE HELPFUL IN TIMES OF TROUBLE. THE MAJOR OBJECTIVES ARE TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN ONE'S ABILITY TO COPE WITH DANGER, LEARN TO LOCATE RESOURCES IN THE COMMUNITY THAT HELP DEAL WITH AND PREVENT CRIME, PRACTICE TECHNIQUES FOR CONTACTING THESE COMMUNITY RESOURCES, DEVELOP RESPECT FOR THE LAWS AND SAFETY RULES OF THE COMMUNITY, AND ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO EVALUATE THEIR DAY-TO-DAY SAFETY HABITS. EACH OF THE 16 ACTIVITY MASTERS HAS GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION IN THE TEACHER'S GUIDE. CURRENT INFORMATION ON WHAT SAFETY AUTHORITIES ADVISE IS INCORPORATED INTO EACH LESSON PLAN. ACTIVITIES ON EACH MASTER CAN BE VARIED TO SUIT THE LEVEL OF THE CLASS, AND ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH NONREADERS AS WELL AS READING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS. (MHP)
