RATES OF RECIDIVISM ARE COMPARED FOR 428 YOUTHS RELEASED ON COURT ORDER BETWEEN VARIOUS LENGTHS OF STAY IN TEXAS TRAINING SCHOOLS.
Abstract
RESULTS SHOW THAT FOR THE LENGTHS OF INSTITUTIONALIZATION REPRESENTED BY THIS STUDY, RECIDIVISM IS NOT RELATED TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME INSTITUTIONALIZED. HOWEVER, FOR SHORTER LENGTHS OF STAY (LESS THAN SIX MONTHS), THE TREND IS TOWARD HIGHER LEVELS OF RECIDIVISM THAN FOR LONGER LENGTHS OF STAY. THE LOWEST LEVEL OF RECIDIVISM FOR ALL SUBJECTS WAS FOUND FOR THOSE YOUTHS WHO HAD COMPLETED THE TRAINING SCHOOL AND PAROLE PHASES OF THEIR TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
