Legislation Requiring or Authorizing Joint Investigations and Cooperation Between Law Enforcement and Child Protection Agencies in Child Abuse Cases

NCJ Number
152788
Date Published
1994
Length
16 pages
Annotation
This document lists and describes all laws that mandate or authorize joint investigations or cooperation between law enforcement and child protection agencies in child abuse and neglect cases, as of December 31, 1993.
Abstract
The summary does not include the procedural details given in many of the statutes, nor does it include provisions requiring cross-reporting of cases among agencies. Thirty-two States and one territory have such laws. The laws specify the agencies that should cooperate with one another, the time within which the investigation or notification should begin, the use of written child abuse protocols, the roles and responsibilities of specific agencies, and related requirements. A separate section explains the function of the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, which was founded by the American Prosecutors Research Institute in 1985.
