A PROJECT INVOLVING THE USE OF A PART-TIME PROBATION OFFICER BY THE LEBANON, N.H., DISTRICT COURT IS EVALUATED.
Abstract
LOCAL PROBATION SERVICES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED ON A PART-TIME BASIS SINCE 1959 BY THE LEBANON DISTRICT COURT. THE PART-TIME LOCAL PROBATION OFFICER SUPERVISES PERSONS PLACED ON PROBATION BY THE COURT, CONDUCTS PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS OF OFFENDERS, AND PREPARES REPORTS FOR THE COURT ON JUVENILES AND ADULTS WITHIN THE SUPERVISION OF THE COURT. ALTHOUGH THE PROBATION OFFICER IS SCHEDULED TO WORK A 28-HOUR WEEK, HE ACTUALLY WORKS 30 OR MORE HOURS PER WEEK IN HIS CAPACITY AS PROBATION OFFICER. THE QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT SUBMITTED TO THE NEW HAMPSHIRE GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY INDICATES THE FOLLOWING WORKLOAD DATA FOR THE PERIOD FROM JULY 1, 1978 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 1978: 20 NEW CASES ENTERED, 10 CASES CLOSED, 3 PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED FOR ADULTS, 12 PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED FOR JUVENILES, 22 ACTIVE CASES OPEN FOR ADULTS, AND 37 ACTIVE CASES OPEN FOR JUVENILES. JUVENILE MATTERS HAVE BECOME MORE COMPLEX AND TIME-CONSUMING, AND IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THERE WILL BE GREATER DEPENDENCY BY THE COURT ON LOCAL PROBATION SERVICES. (DEP)
