This article explores the changing requirements and responsibilities associated with leading men and women of the modern era of police work.
Abstract
Today, law enforcement leaders face many new requirements and responsibilities. This is not to say that the current mission has changed significantly; the basic functions of police work are static. However, the author, a supervisor and training officer in Monmouth County, NJ presents his view, as a veteran officer on the changing requirements and responsibilities associated with leading the modern era of police work. The overall view is that today's leaders must assume a new role, accept additional responsibilities, and understand the changes in the culture and the people coming into the profession and lead with a dedication to the core principles and purposes and to the community they work for. 2 endnotes
