THREE STYLES OF LEADERSHIP - AUTHORITARIAN, DEMOCRATIC, AND LAISSEZ-FAIRE - WITH THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF EACH.
Abstract
IT IS CONCLUDED THAT AN ECLECTIC APPROACH EMPLOYING ALL THREE IS THE BEST METHOD. THE QUALITIES NECESSARY TO BE AN EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE LEADER ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING ENTHUSIASM, INITIATIVE, EMOTIONAL CONTROL, FAIR-MINDEDNESS, COURAGE, DECISIVENESS, GOOD JUDGMENT, INTEGRITY, AND LOYALTY. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES PERSONAL HABITS AND METHODS OF OPERATION WHICH WOULD BE WORTHWHILE TO INCORPORATE INTO ONES' OWN INDIVIDUAL STYLE OF LEADERSHIP. METHODS FOR MOTIVATING AND GUIDING SUBORDINATES BY PRAISE, CRITICISM, AND SYMPATHETIC UNDERSTANDING ARE EXPLAINED. THE APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A SUGGESTED CHECKLIST OF SUPERVISORY ACTIVITIES AND DUTIES, BOTH IN THE STATION AND THE FIELD, AND A LEADERSHIP PROFILE DESIGNED TO HELP THE READER THINK ABOUT WHAT LEADERSHIP MEANS TO HIM. ALTHOUGH MANY INDIVIDUALS ALREADY POSSESS SOME MEASURE OF LEADERSHIP, THIS BOOKLET WILL HELP THEM TO DEVELOP AND INCREASE THEIR LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. (SNI ABSTRACT)
