This journal includes a variety of articles that address human rights and the legal system in Great Britain, the New Zealand youth court system, child protection and child abuse, the right to a fair trial, and drug courts.
Abstract
The editorial article in the journal looks at the Human Rights Act, part of the European Convention, that was to become effective in October 2000. This act contains articles and provisions on the role of parents in decision-making about their children, child protection, the role of children in court proceedings, and juvenile detention. The next article covers the New Zealand youth court system, with specific emphasis on the work of youth court judges, drug and alcohol problems of young people who appear in court, the treatment of Maori and Pacific Island families, actual youth court cases, reparation, crime victims, and family conferences. Another article considers child protection, child development, the harm caused by abusive or neglectful acts of parents, parental responsibility, and children at risk. Subsequent articles focus on the importance of protecting vulnerable children, human rights considerations in the trial of juvenile murderers, and drug courts as an exercise in cooperation between criminal courts and health services. 1 figure
