This is a systematic examination of the evolution of American warfare regulations and their relationship to international law.
Abstract
While it is generally assumed that there were always limits to what soldiers were permitted to do in war, it was not until 1863 that the United States issued its first Army manual. Subsequently, manuals of land warfare were issued in 1914, 1934, 1940, 1944, 1956, and 1976 by the American military. This volume contains information on: (1) creation of the manuals; (2) limits to what soldiers may do; (3) forbidden weapons and forbidden strategies; (4) superior orders; (5) prisoners of war; (6) penalties for violations; and (7) revising the laws of war.
