INDIAN POLICE ACADEMY AT ROSWELL NEW MEXICO OFFERS TRAINING FOR INDIAN POLICE OFFICERS IN PROTECTIVE SERVICES AND ENFORCEMENT OF STATE LAWS.
Abstract
THE ACADEMY OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN ADDITION TO VOCATIONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS INSTRUCTION. STUDENTS FOR THE 12 WEEK COURSE ARE DRAWN FROM 76 TRIBES IN 19 STATES. SOCIAL RELATIONS COURSES ARE THE LARGEST BLOCK OF INSTRUCTION IN THE ACADEMY'S CURRICULUM, RELECTING EFFORTS TO EDUCATE THE OFFICER IN THE BROAD APPLICATION OF HIS JOB RESPONSIBILITIES. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS ARE TRAINED IN THE FULL RANGE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES. WHILE THE INDIAN OFFICERS ARE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH SERVING THE 300,000 PEOPLE ON 83 RESERVATIONS, THEY ALSO ASSIST IN THE APPREHENSION OF CRIMINALS OUTSIDE THE RESERVATION.
