Observations and survey information provided information for an evaluation of the general effectiveness of the training program used to instruct staff at the Iowa Training School on the law-related education program.
Abstract
The Iowa Law Related Education Center at Drake University developed a plan to use law-related education in juvenile justice settings in 1985. The Iowa State Training School is currently the only institution that has fully implemented such a program. The training program for staff covered 8 months. The evaluation focused on the usefulness of the training to the staff, the appropriateness of using law-related education in the training school, and the perceived impact of the education on the students. Findings were generally positive. The results indicated that training in institutional settings should receive administrative support, include as many staff members as possible, use a variety of teaching techniques, use understandable materials, and provide adequate resources for staff. In addition, a successful program in an institution requires adequate preparation and use of outside resource persons, careful selection and presentation of materials, active student participation, and the involvement of building administrators.
