This article explains the limitations and capabilities of the shotgun and its safe and effective use in a variety of patrol situations.
Abstract
It describes the mode of action of the pump action and semi-automatic types and their advantages. It also covers specific modifications to the shotgun that will meet operational requirements and individual needs of the officers using the equipment. Extended magazine tubes, sights, slings and carry straps, recoil pads, stock styles, ammunition carriers, flashlight mounts, and chokes are included. Understanding of patterning, the degree and manner in which the shot spreads at various distances, is important for proper deployment and use of the shotgun. Shot loads are important in selection of ammunition dependent on job criteria of the officers. In addition to stationary marksmanship training, shotgun training and qualifications programs should include mounting, firing stance, loading and unloading, and firing from varied positions. Patterning the weapon and recognizing the weapons zones will provide the officer with confidence in the use of the weapon in field conditions.
