This booklet discusses AIDS, and offers recommendations and guidelines to law enforcement officers in handling potentially infectious materials they may encounter in their daily activities.
Abstract
The history and cause of AIDS, testing and possible treatment are discussed. Body fluids which may contain the AIDS virus and means of transmitting the disease are identified. Specific emphasis is placed on accidental transmission of AIDS to law enforcement and correctional facility officers. Other topics discussed include AIDS cases in the United States, survivability, handling of suspects infected with AIDS, procedures for dealing with saliva, needle sticks, and other injuries, and protective equipment such as face masks. Correctional facility policies for handling AIDS cases; methods for decontaminating clothing, the squad car, and personal equipment; and methods for conducting autopsies and handling deceased persons also are discussed.
