Abstract
This paper was written as a companion piece to the Model Policy on Law Enforcement Encounters with Developmentally Disabled developed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) National Law Enforcement Policy Center. The material included in the paper will aid law enforcement executives in their efforts to tailor the model to the particular circumstances and requirements of their law enforcement agency and the community they serve. The report is divided into four sections that include a discussion of the developmentally disabled person, an examination of common police encounters, and a discussion of developmentally disabled persons as victims. The Model Policy for Encounters with the Developmentally Disabled is included with the paper.
