Abstract
GENERAL TOPIC AREAS ADDRESSED ARE THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, POLICE AGENCIES, ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT, POLICE FUNCTIONS, POLICE AND THE LAW, THE SOCIOLOGY OF POLICE, CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, LAW ENFORCEMENT AS A CAREER, AND THE FUTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. TEACHING OBJECTIVES ARE OUTLINED FOR EACH SUBJECT SEGMENT. THE TEXT'S OBJECTIVE IS TO PRESENT A REALISTIC VIEW OF LAW ENFORCEMENT BY GIVING INFORMATION ON WHO THE POLICE ARE, WHERE THEY COME FROM, AND WHAT THEY DO BEFORE DISCUSSING HOW POLICE FUNCTION IN RELATION TO THE LEGAL PROCESS AND SOCIETY.
