Reports included in these proceedings of the 20th Colloquy on European Law address several themes: law and moral dilemmas which affect life and death, law and moral dilemmas relating to the beginnings of life, and the contribution of science to life and death issues.
Abstract
The numerous viewpoints expressed during the proceedings in response to questions which pertain to euthanasia, abortion, new reproductive techniques, and techniques for the prolongation of life confirm the difficulty of realizing consensual solutions at the legal, social, and moral levels. Conference participants concurred as to the need to continue discussing these issues and to develop new legal instruments which take into account medical progress. A consensus was reached that the fundamental rights of humankind as defined in the European Convention on Human Rights must constitute the point of departure for resolving opposing opinions in regard to questions about life and death. 298 footnotes and 62 references
