A SURVEY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED BY THE FORD FOUNDATION SINCE THE MID-1960'S IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE SURVEY DESCRIBES A CROSS-SECTION OF FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED PROGRAMS IN THE FIELDS OF POLICING, COURTS, CORRECTIONS, PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY (THE LAWYER'S ROLE), RESEARCH, AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION. LAW ENFORCEMENT GRANTS HAVE SUPPORTED EXPERIMENTS IN TECHNIQUES OF PREVENTING CRIME AND APPREHENDING CRIMINALS, IMPROVEMENTS IN POLICE SELECTION AND TRAINING METHODS, AND EFFORTS TO BUILD POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. ORGANIZATIONS FUNDED BY THE FOUNDATION HAVE HELPED TO MAKE LEGAL SERVICES AVAILABLE TO POOR AND MINORITY PERSONS, TO EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES TO TRIALS AND PRETRIAL DETENTION, AND TO ENSURE THE EFFICACY AND FAIRNESS OF COURT PROCEDURES. THE FOUNDATION HAS ALSO SUPPORTED EXPERIMENTS IN COMMUNITY-BASED REHABILITATION, PROVISION OF VOLUNTEER AND LEGAL SERVICES TO INMATES AND PAROLEES, AND ANALYSES OF PRISON AND JAIL CONDITIONS. OTHER FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED WORK HAS INCLUDED CLINICAL PROGRAMS TO DEVELOP LAW STUDENTS' FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF AND INTEREST IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL CODES, REPRESENTATION OF COLLECTIVE AND CLASS INTERESTS, UNIVERSITY-BASED CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTES, AND EFFORTS BY CITIZEN GROUPS TO SOLVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROBLEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT. (LKM)
