CHANGES IN AMERICAN SOCIETY DURING THE 20TH CENTURY AND THE EXPECTED IMPACT OF THESE CHANGES ON THE LEGAL PROFESSION ARE EXAMINED IN A SERIES OF BACKGROUND PAPERS PREPARED FOR A SEMINAR.
Abstract
EACH PAPER IN THE SERIES WAS WRITTEN BY A LEGAL EXPERT. THE BOOK WAS PREPARED AS BACKGROUND FOR THE 1968 AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION-AMERICAN ASSEMBLY. THE FIRST SECTION CONTAINS ARTICLES ON THE CHANGING FAMILY AND SOCIAL LAW, THE CHANGING NEEDS OF MINORITIES, THE RISE IN AWARENESS OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND DUE PROCESS, AND THE INCREASING IMPORTANCE OF ECONOMIC LAW TO THE AVERAGE CITIZEN. THE SECOND SECTION IS CALLED 'REPRESENTATION OF THE UNREPRESENTED.' IT EXAMINES THE NEED FOR PUBLIC REPRESENTATION DURING ADMINISTRATIVE RULE-MAKING PROCEDURES, THE SPECIAL LEGAL NEEDS OF MINORITIES, LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR PERSONS WITH MODERATE INCOME, AND LEGAL SERVICES FOR THE POOR. THE FINAL SECTION LOOKS AT THE NEED FOR A SIMPLIFIED SYSTEM OF LAW, CONSIDERS THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE LAWYER, DISCUSSES THE NEED FOR AND THE CONTROL OF THE PUBLIC LAWYER, AND REVIEWS PROPOSED REFORMS IN LAW SCHOOL EDUCATION. GREATER EDUCATION FOR CITIZENS CONCERNING THE LAW ALSO IS URGED. A DESCRIPTION OF THE AMERICAN ASSEMBLY IS APPENDED. THE BOOK IS INDEXED. (GLR)
