This video portrays the activities of the shock incarceration program in Brocton, NY, interspersed with interpretive comments by a participant and the director of shock development.
Abstract
The video documents the military-style structure of the program, which emphasizes discipline, strict compliance with schedules, cleanliness, order, and obedience to instructors. Activities include marching, exercise, classes, and counseling. Other group activities portrayed are a class in financial management; an orientation session; a "clearing" session in which participants express their feelings about themselves and the program; and the graduation program. Comments by the director of shock development indicate that the program uses much the same strategy as gangs, in that they emphasize dependence upon the group, acceptance by the group, compliance with group values, and group goals. Emphasis in the overall program design is achievement, self-management and self-control, life evaluation, assessment of behaviors and their consequences, goal-setting, and life management designed to achieve goals. A few parole activities are also documented, as parole officers continue to provide group sessions and group discipline.
