A SERIES OF BRIEF AND CANDID SITUATIONS ARE DRAMATIZED, SUGGESTING A VARIETY OF PRECAUTIONS TO BE OBSERVED AND DEFENSIVE MEASURES TO BE TAKEN BY WOMEN WHEN AN ENCOUNTER BECOMES THREATENING OR CRITICAL.
Abstract
USING THE WORD 'SAFE' AS AN ACRONYM, A PLAN OF ACTION IMPLEMENTING FACETS OF FOUR DETERRENT TECHNIQUES SECURE, AVOID, FLEE, AND ENGAGE - IS PRESENTED. MEASURES TO ENSURE SECURITY, SUCH AS THE USE OF EFFECTIVE HOME AND AUTOMOBILE LOCKS AND CHECKING CREDENTIALS OF STRANGERS ARE SHOWN. SIMILAR EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO THE AVOIDANCE OF POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS SUCH AS DARK OR DESERTED STREETS, OR HITCHHIKING. THE FEMALE VIEWER IS URGED TO FLEE IF THE ENCOUNTER BECOMES UNMANAGEABLE. FINALLY, SELF-DEFENSE TECHNIQUES TO ENGAGE THE UNARMED ATTACKER ARE DEMONSTRATED. AT ALL TIMES THE FILM STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMON SENSE IN AVOIDING POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
