CHARTS AND GRAPHS DOCUMENT THE RESPONSES OF 200 CRIMINALISTIC LABORATORIES TO A PROFICIENCY SURVEY INVOLVING TEST ANALYSES OF SAMPLES OF SODIUM PENTOBARBITAL.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS ONE OF SEVERAL AIMED AT ASSESSING LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES (236 SURVEYED, 200 RESPONSES) WERE ASKED TO EXAMINE THE TEST SUBSTANCE BY USING THEIR NORMAL PROCEDURES, TO IDENTIFY THE SUBSTANCE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR REPORTING POLICIES, TO INDICATE THE ANALYTICAL METHODS USED, AND TO REPORT ANY ADDITIONAL DATA THAT WOULD BE DEVELOPED ROUTINELY IN SIMILAR ANALYSES. SURVEY FINDINGS ARE REPORTED IN SIX TABLES: LABORATORY IDENTIFICATIONS OF THE SUBSTANCE; A SCHEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG DRUG NAMES USED BY THE LABORATORIES TO DESCRIBE THE SAMPLE; TESTS USED TO ANALYZE THE SAMPLE; ADDITIONAL QUANTITATIVE RESULTS SUBMITTED BY 24 LABORATORIES; AND A DETAILED LIST OF RESPONSES TO EACH OF THE FOUR QUESTIONS POSED IN THE SURVEY. NO NARRATIVE INTERPRETATION IS PROVIDED. AN EXPLANATION OF SURVEY PROCEDURES AND A COPY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE INCLUDED. OTHER PROFICIENCY SURVEYS INVOLVING DRUG ANALYSIS ARE REPORTED IN NCJ-47527 (HEROIN AND COCAINE) AND 47536 (AMPHETAMINES). PROFICIENCY SURVEYS FOR OTHER SUBSTANCES ARE DOCUMENTED IN NCJ47523-47526, 47528-47535, AND 47537-47542. (LKM)
