THIS PAPER FOCUSES ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESSORS IN POLICE WORK, WITH EMPHASIS ON THOSE STRESSORS APPLICABLE TO UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICERS AT THE PATROLMAN OR SIMILAR RANK.
Abstract
THIRTY-THREE ALLEGED/IMPLIED SOURCES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED AND CLASSIFIED INTO SIX CATEGORIES BASED ON REFLECTIONS OF THE AUTHOR'S PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS AND FEELINGS WHILE PERFORMING THE FUNCTIONS OF A PATROL OFFICER IN A METROPOLITAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS. THE CATEGORIES INTO WHICH THESE SOURCES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS FALL INCLUDE: INTRAORGNIZATIONAL PRACTICES AND CHARACTERISTICS; CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PRACTICES AND CHARACTERISTICS; PUBLIC PRACTICES AND CHARACTERISTICS; POLICE WORK ITSELF; AND THE POLICE OFFICER HIMSELF/HERSELF.
