OVERVIEW OF A NEW YORK CITY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM WHICH WORKS WITH YOUTHFUL PRISONERS - AGED 16 TO 21- WHO ARE AWAITING TRIAL.
Abstract
VOLUNTEERS, FOLLOWING A SIX WEEK TRAINING PERIOD, WORK REGULARLY WITH THEIR PRISONER FOR ONE YEAR, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER HE REMAINS IN A CITY JAIL, IS RELEASED, OR IS SENT TO A STATE PRISON. THERE IS AN EMPHASIS ON RECRUITING YOUNG BLACK AND PUERTO RICAN VOLUNTEERS WHO SHARE COMMON BACKGROUNDS WITH MANY OF THE PRISONERS. OAR VOLUNTEERS OFFER FRIENDSHIP, CONTACT WITH LAWYERS AND FAMILIES, AND AID IN OBTAINING JOBS AND SERVICES. THE PROGRAM WAS RECENTLY EXTENDED TO ADOLESCENT FEMALE PRISONERS.
