This report presents information about trends during 1995-99 and changes in recent years in recorded crimes, criminal court processes, juvenile justice, and corrections in New South Wales, Australia.
Abstract
The report aims to aid effective planning and policy development. The data revealed that sexual assaults, other sex offenses, robbery, breaking and entering, and motor vehicle theft all declined significantly between 1998 and 1999. New cases increased significantly in local courts, declined significantly in the District Court, and were relatively unchanged in the Supreme Court between July 1997 and June 1999. The number of cases registered in Children’s Courts declined 10.5 percent between July 1997 and June 1999. The total number of prisoners in custody increased 7.7 percent in the same period. The number of remand prisoners increased 21.3 percent, the number of sentenced prisoners increased 5 percent, and the number of fine defaulters in custody declined by 98.4 percent.
