This handbook for parents and caregivers guides them in providing information and support to their children that can prevent them from using drugs.
Abstract
The handbook opens with the following advice: "Kids who learn from their parents about the dangers of underage drinking, drugs and other harmful substances are less likely to use those substances." The handbook emphasizes the importance of parents using informal conversations with their children to teach them about the harm that drugs, tobacco use, and underage drinking can cause them. The stage for such conversations is set as parents develop a pattern of open communication with their children on any issue that pertains to attitudes, behavior, and experiences the child has within and outside the home. The handbook provides information to parents and caregivers on the damaging effects and symptoms of various types of drugs, particularly those that are popular in the youth culture. Advice given to parents is to know what your children are doing, be involved in their lives, praise and reward good behavior, and set limits with clear rules and consequences for violations. Other advice is to work with other parents to obtain a list of everyone's addresses, e-mails, and phone numbers; show up early to pick up your child in order to observe his/her behavior with others; and occasionally check to see if children are where they say they are going to be. Other issues discussed in this handbook are the content of communication with a child, appropriate moments for discussing drug use, and where to get help in the community. Some resources are listed.
