This article discusses the importance of police training in the detection of disguised weapons.
Abstract
The disguised weapons training program, a program of the recently merged Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC) and the National Corrections and Law Enforcement Training and Technology Center (NCLETTC), is designed to provide increased educational opportunities for officers by conducting workshops on disguised weapons detection at all national law enforcement and corrections conferences. The article describes the pervasiveness of disguised weapons and underscores the importance of training in learning how and where to search for disguised weapons. In addition to disguised weapons training for police officers and security personnel, the article outlines the importance of information sharing among criminal justice agencies. By sharing information, agencies will be able to track trends that will aid in proactive policing approaches to public safety. A textbox included in the article contains a listing of disguised weapons guides.
