This report presents the most recent information on juveniles taken into custody and the data collected in 40 States and the District of Columbia through the State Juvenile Corrections System Reporting Program (SJCSRP).
Abstract
This report responds to a congressional mandate from the 1988 Amendments to the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act. The amendments require an annual summary of the number and characteristics of juveniles taken into custody; the number of juveniles who died in custody and the circumstances of their deaths; and trends demonstrated by the data. Separate data are presented for juvenile nonoffenders, status offenders, delinquent offenders, and by types of facilities based on the following measures: (1) number of juveniles taken into custody; (2) rates at which juveniles are taken into custody; and (3) trends demonstrated by the data, disaggregated by types of offenses with which the juveniles are charged, race and gender of the juveniles, and ages of the juveniles in custody. The report provides this information for specified types of facilities, such as secure detention and correctional facilities, jails, and lockups. Tables, figures, references, appendixes
