Abstract
Whether the incidents involved a group or just the individual is addressed as is the suspected use of drugs or alcohol by the arrestees during incidents or at the time of arrest. Records of 636 juveniles arrested in 606 distinct incidents of selected offenses were studied. The offenses considered were burglary, motor vehicle theft, vandalism, shoplifting, larceny, simple assault, weapons offenses, drunk driving, liquor offenses, disorderly conduct, gambling, drug use, drug possession, drug sale, forgery, fraud, and 'others.' Shoplifting was the most common charge for which arrests were made. The average age of the arrestees was 15 years old. More than 75 percent were males, and more than a third were of mixed ancestry. Most had been born in Hawaii. Just over 75 percent of the arrestees were married. Records of 4.7 percent of the juveniles indicated a history of abuse or neglect. The majority of arrestees had no history of arrest prior to 1985. A total of 52.4 percent of arrests were for repeat offenses. The majority of offenses were group activities. In 11.6 percent of the reports, suspicion of drug or alcohol use was reported by the arresting officer. 22 tables. (Author summary modified)
