This bulletin from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) presents data on OJJDP's 2010 survey of juvenile residential facilities.
Highlights from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP's) 2010 survey of juvenile residential facilities include the following: between 2008 and 2010, the juvenile offender population decreased by 18 percent, yet 18 percent of facilities were at standard be capacity and 2 percent were over capacity; 51 percent of facilities were publicly operated and held 70 percent of juvenile offenders; 92 percent of facilities provided residents with some form of schooling; and routine evaluations for substance abuse were conducted in 70 percent of facilities, while 57 percent conducted evaluations of mental health needs and 89 percent conducted evaluations of suicide risk. Data for this report were obtained from OJJDP's Juvenile Residential Facility Census (JRFC) which is conducted every 2 years. Information collected in the JRFC covers facility security, capacity and crowding, injuries and deaths in custody, and facility ownership and operation. Additional information is also collected on specific services provided by the facilities. Tables
