This report presents statistics on the placement of nondelinquent juveniles in Florida's secure detention facilities during the first half of calendar year 1993. In some places, the report includes data from the second half of calendar year 1992.
Abstract
During 1992, a total of 417 admissions of nondelinquent juveniles were reported by secure juvenile detention facilities. These admissions represented 313 individual children. When the Florida Supreme Court ruled in July 1992 that children could not be detained for contempt of court, the number of nondelinquents in secure detention fell. During the first half of 1993, there were only 90 nondelinquent juveniles held in secure detention. Statistics are presented by center, age, sex, ethnic group, and reason for confinement. These included truancy, being beyond parental or State control, failure to follow protective service, pick-up orders, running away, and failure to appear in court.
