Abstract
THIS VOLUME WAS PREPARED BY THE BENCHBOOK COMMITTEE OF THE INDIANA COUNCIL OF JUVENILE COURT JUDGES, BASED ON ANALYSIS OF INDIANA STATUTES, RULES OF PROCEDURE, AND PRACTICES OF JUDGES AND LAWYERS IN INDIANA'S JUVENILE COURTS. PROCEDURES DISCUSSED INCLUDE TEMPORARY DETENTION AND CUSTODY DECISIONS, OBTAINING JURISDICTION, PRELIMINARY FACT GATHERING, AND 12 OTHER ASPECTS OF JUVENILE COURT PROCEEDINGS. FOR EACH TOPIC, A SCOPE NOTE REFERS TO STATUTES AND CASE LAW PROVIDING THE BASIS FOR AUTHORITY CONCERNING THE PROCEDURES INVOLVED. SAMPLE FORMS TO BE USED FOR OBTAINING RELEVANT INFORMATION AND SAMPLE DIALOGUES FOR JUDGES TO USE IN VARIOUS PHASES OF PROCEEDINGS, ARE PRESENTED. THE BENCHBOOK REPRESENTS EXAMPLES BASED ON PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OF INDIANA JUDGES BUT DOES NOT CONSTITUTE OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE INDIANA SUPREME COURT. A REVISED EDITION OF THE BENCHBOOK IS BEING PREPARED TO REFLECT THE NEW JUVENILE LEGISLATION WHICH TAKES EFFECT ON OCTOBER 1, 1979. (CFW)
