STUDY OF 1962-1972 ARREST PATTERNS, ANALYSIS OF DETENTION HOME POPULATIONS AND PROBATION OFFICE FILES, AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS FOR 1971 AND 1972 RANK ALBUQUERQUE/BERNALILLO COUNTY AS THE CITY WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SERIOUS CRIMES PER CAPITA KNOWN TO THE POLICE. JUVENILES COMPOSE ALMOST HALF OF THE PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR THESE CRIMES. IN EXPLAINING HOW THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ALBUQUERQUE IDENTIFIES, PROCESSES, AND CORRECTS JUVENILE OFFENDERS, AN EFFORT IS MADE TO DETERMINE HOW THE COMPONENTS OF THE SYSTEM INTERFACE WITH EACH OTHER AND HOW THE ALBUQUERQUE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM COMPARES WITH OTHER SYSTEMS NATIONALLY. THE STUDY INDICATES THAT ALBUQUERQUE'S JUVENILE CRIME STATISTICS ARE IN LINE WITH THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. IT ALSO NOTES THAT THE NUMBER OF FEMALES INVOLVED IN JUVENILE CRIMES FROM 1962-1972 HAS GREATLY INCREASED. THE BURDEN OF INCREASED JUVENILE OFFENDERS IS FELT BY HEAVIER CASELOADS IN THE PROBATION OFFICE AND JUVENILE COURT. IN THE FINAL CHAPTER FEATURES OF JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEMS IN OTHER CITIES ARE PROPOSED FOR COMMUNITY CONSIDERATION. ARREST STATISTICS BY OFFENSE AND SEX ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
