This article describes the training and technical assistance program of the Southwest Florida Juvenile Detention Center (Fort Myers, Fla.), one of three centers throughout the Nation selected by the American Correctional Association to provide information, technical assistance, and training to juvenile detention professionals from around the country.
Abstract
In conjunction with the aforementioned activities, the centers are to have written policies and procedures as well as operations similar to those advocated in Guidelines for the Development of Policies and Procedures for Juvenile Detention Facilities. In November 1983, the facility became the first Florida juvenile detention center to be accredited by the American Correctional Association. Since becoming a resource center in 1985, the facility has held seven 3-day workshops with more than 50 participants. Most come to get more information on the accreditation process and observe the operation of an accredited facility. In addition to the workshops, the resource center provides telephone consultations and written material on request. Most participant evaluations indicate that the program of formal training, discussions, and observation of center operations has been valuable for their work.
