Using a sample of 828 Japanese juvenile delinquents, arrested by police in Tokyo and 10 other prefectures between February and March 1992, this study examined how delinquents spent their holidays, how they wished to pass their leisure time, and what types of community activities they would like to join.
Abstract
Compared with juvenile nondelinquents, this sample had a higher proportion of respondents who wished to spend their leisure time in so-called deviant-affinitive types of enjoyment, including going to karaoke bars or riding around in motorcycles and cars. When delinquents have Saturdays off from school, they participate in those types of activities and usually fail to participate in constructive community activities. Their interest in community activities is generally limited to sport-related events. Some juvenile delinquents who aspire to higher educational or career goals do spend their holidays more constructively by studying or joining in more community activities. 9 tables
