NCJ Number
152655
Date Published
1991
Length
60 pages
Annotation
This is the first comprehensive report concerning juvenile delinquency in West Virginia; it contains preliminary analyses of data covering the period between July and December 1990, contained within the recently established Juvenile Justice Data Base (JJDB).
Abstract
Following an introductory chapter on juvenile delinquency and the development of the juvenile justice system, and an overview on the juvenile justice system in West Virginia, the report outlines characteristics of juvenile delinquents, including age, gender, race, chronicity, living situation, family income, and educational status. Delinquency cases are presented by county, and tables on juvenile delinquency offenses are broken down by total offenses, most common offenses, and serious offenses. The report also focuses on secured predisposition detention and system responses to delinquency, including informal and formal actions taken by the counties, adjudication, transfers to criminal jurisdiction, grants of improvement periods, psychological evaluation, probation, out- of-home placements, and mental health commitments.
