THIS BOOKLET BRIEFLY SETS OUT SOME GENERAL FACTS ABOUT DELINQUENCY AND PRESENTS EXAMPLES OF COUNTY EFFORTS IN DELINQUENCY PREVENTION AND TREATMENT.
Abstract
A DISCUSSION OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND SYSTEM ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERS VOCATIONAL TRAINING, COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS, USE OF VOLUNTEERS, AND YOUTH SERVICE BUREAUS. THE FOLLOWING MODEL COUNTY PROGRAMS ARE HIGHLIGHTED: THE SOUTHWEST VALLEY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (BERNALILLO COUNTY, NEW MEXICO), THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CA) SOCIAL ADVOCATES FOR YOUTH PROGRAM; AND THE RENSSELAER COUNTY (NY) YOUTH SERVICE BUREAU. THE ARKANSAS COUNTIES' SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TO REWRITE THEIR STATE JUVENILE CODE IS ALSO DOCUMENTED. IN ADDITION, A POSSIBLE MODEL FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS IN RURAL COUNTIES IS OUTLINED. REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE A LIST OF SUPREME COURT DECISIONS AFFECTING JUVENILES AND A LIST OF SOURCES OF FUNDING, INFORMATION, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND EVALUATION, AND VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE.
