In this podcast episode, host Josh Mondoro welcomes three guests to discuss the Restoring Promise Program. The guests are Kyleigh Clark-Moorman, Selma Djokovic, and Josh Somers. They discuss how they got involved with criminal justice research and, more specifically, the VERA Institute of Justice and MILPA Collective’s program that aims to improve prison culture. They begin by discussing current culture and life in the U.S. prison system is like, some challenges of reentry into the community, and the inspiration for the Restoring Promise Program and the improvement it seeks to bring to the U.S. They also discuss incarceration’s emphasis on control and punishment, contrasting it with the German prison system, including juvenile and adult facilities, and their emphasis on upholding human dignity.
