PRESENTS THE BILL OF RIGHTS AS A RESTRICTION ON THE POWERS OF GOVERNMENT IN THE INTEREST OF PRESERVING THE AUTONOMY OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND STIMULATES. DISCUSSION ON CENSORSHIP AND THE RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED.
Abstract
THE HISTORIC BACKGROUND THAT INFLUENCED THE FORMULATION OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS IS INTERPRETED. AN EPISODE OF CENSORSHIP OF A HIGH SCHOOL PAPER IS PRESENTED WITH THE SUGGESTION THAT THE PROJECTOR BE TURNED OFF FOR DISCUSSION OF THE ISSUES INVOLVED. THE GAULT CASE IS DRAMATIZED, IN WHICH AN ACCUSED JUVENILE IS DEPRIVED OF THE BENEFITS OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM OF HIS STATE, AGAIN WITH THE SUGGESTION THAT THE PROJECTOR BE STOPPED FOR DISCUSSION OF THE ISSUES PRESENTED. THE CONCLUDING SEGMENTS OF THE FILM PRESENTS THE ARGUMENTS OF THOSE WHO FAVOR STRICTER INTERPRETATION OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS TO GIVE THE POLICE GREATER LATITUDE IN MAINTAINING LAW AND ORDER, AS WELL AS THE POSITION OF THOSE WHO HOLD THAT THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL MUST BE MAINTAINED AGAINST THE POWER OF THE STATE.
