SEVERAL CITIES HAVE BEGUN CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO LOWER THE CRIME RATE AND REDUCE THE FEAR OF CRIME WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. THE NEED FOR THESE PROGRAMS IS DESCRIBED IN THIS FILM.
Abstract
THE PREVALENT FEAR OF VIOLENT CRIMES HAS LED MANY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION ORGANIZATIONS. WORK PROGRAMS INCLUDE A RADIO PATROL PROJECT, WHERE THE CITIZEN GROUP HAS DIRECT RADIO CONTACT WITH THE POLICE. OTHER SOCIAL SERVICE GROUPS WORK WITH THE POLICE TO HELP KEEP YOUNG PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CURFEW VIOLATIONS. COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS TUTOR HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS AND HELP THEM TO GET THEIR GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMAS. IN NEW YORK CITY, THERE ARE OVER 25,000 CITIZENS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THESE OR SIMILAR PROGRAMS. IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, VOLUNTEER CRIME WATCHERS HELP THE POLICE. THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH RADIOS SO THEY ARE ABLE TO CALL IN REPORTS OF CRIME IN PROGRESS. MORE CITIES SHOULD DEVELOP THESE TYPES OF PROGRAMS TO INSURE THAT MORE CRIMES ARE REPORTED AND TO GIVE THE COMMUNITY A GREATER SENSE OF SECURITY. FOR RELATED FILMS, SEE NCJ 48602-48604. (BAC)
